ALL I CAN SAY (Blind Melon / Shannon Hoon) Documentary Streaming Rental!

We are glad to participate in the streaming of the new ALL I CAN SAY (BLIND MELON / SHANNON HOON) documentary! Click the link below to rent it from us!!!

Shannon Hoon, lead singer of the rock band Blind Melon, filmed himself from 1990-95 with a Hi8 video camera, recording up until a few hours before his sudden death at the age of 28. His camera was a diary and his closest confidant. In the hundreds of hours of footage, Hoon meticulously documented his life – his family, his creative process, his television, his band’s rise to fame and his struggle with addiction. He filmed his daughter’s birth, and archived the politics and culture of the 90’s, an era right before the internet changed the world. Created with his own footage, voice and music, this intimate autobiography is a prescient exploration of experience and memory in the age of video. It is also Shannon Hoon’s last work, completed 23 years after his death.

Other Music Documentary & Vinyl Nation Documentary Streaming Rental!

This Saturday would have been Record Store Day and while we are bummed we can’t see all of your beautiful faces we still wanted to celebrate with you somehow! We are participating in the digital release of two documentaries about vinyl and record stores and the community they create worldwide and on a local level! We will be posting links to two movies “Other Music NYC Documentary” and “Vinyl Nation” that you can rent for a small price. Percentages of all rental sales support us and the filmmakers! The info and trailers to both films are listed below. Both documentary links will be posted Friday and will be available for a short amount of time for your viewing pleasure.

Other Music Documentary:
Other Music was an influential and uncompromising New York City record store that was vital to the city’s early 2000s indie music scene. But when the store is forced to close its doors due to rent increases, the homogenization of urban culture, and the shift from CDs to downloadable and streaming music, a cultural landmark is lost. Through vibrant storytelling, the documentary captures the record store’s vital role in the musical and cultural life of the city, and highlights the artists whose careers it helped launch including Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, William Basinski, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sharon Van Etten, Yo La Tengo and TV On The Radio.

Vinyl Nation Documentary:
Vinyl Nation is a deep dig into the crates of the vinyl record resurgence to discover what an old technology says about our relationship to music and each other in a divided time in America.

We’re still here for you Huntsville!

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic numbers growing in our sweet home state we have decided it’s best to keep our doors closed for a couple of weeks at Vertical House Records.

We will be accepting lists of your “apocalypse albums” and doing the crate digging for you. If we have it, we can generate an invoice on paypal and once it’s been paid, we can deliver or ship it out to you!

We also have gift certificates available should you want to buy one now and save it for when you can come dig yourself! You are welcome to paypal and note “gift certificate” and you will have instant credit with us woo!!

Keep an eye on our social media for more updates!

We have and always will appreciate you fine Huntsvillians! Thanks so much for your continued support throughout the years. May we all come out of this safe and sound! We love you all! – Andy & Ashley

4/18: Nox Boys, Nate & The Nightmares, Bad Hops (8pm, $7)

NOX BOYS (Pittsburgh, Pa)

The band, straight out of Blawnox, PA, debuted in 2014 with their self-titled album on record label Get Hip. Their record company’s co-owner, Gregg Kostelich of the Cynics, knew he had a formidable group of garage band enthusiasts who were ready to create a unique style of their own. He was right.

The Nox Boys have built quite a reputation in western PA, but their reach doesn’t end there. They’ve opened for notable bands such as Mudhoney, FIDLAR, Twin Peaks, The Black Lips, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Cynics, and many more. The Nox Boys reached a milestone in 2015, opening for Benjamin Booker on Three Rivers Arts Festival’s main stage in Pittsburgh, PA. They have received quite a bit of airplay on Little Stephen’s Underground Garage (SIRIUS XM), Burger Records Rock “N” Roll Radio Show, college radio, and mainstream radio stations in the Pittsburgh area such as WYEP, WDVE, THE X, and more.

Their sophomore effort will be coming out this year on legendary Garage rock label Get Hip Records.

Some may know him as the mild-mannered clerk at Wuxtry Records in Athens, GA, others may remember him as the drummer for now-defunct pervert pop band CARS CAN BE BLUE, but the only way to truly know the cauldron of lust, hate & bitterness that seethes within the anguished depths of Nate Mitchell’s eternally tortured soul is to listen to his band: NATE & the NIGHTMARES (user discretion is advised)

BAD HOPS (Birmingham, Al)

Bad Hops is a three-piece rock band that popped up in Birmingham in the summer of 2018. Featuring members of Holy Youth and The Glory Fires, Bad Hops writes and rips through quick tunes influenced by mid-70s New York punk and a bunch of other stuff with loud guitars. The band cut several tracks in the studio in fall 2018, and they’ll release the first two singles from those sessions with Earth Libraries in February 2019.
