10/8: “Punkhouse in the Deep South” Book Tour Storms Vertical House Records” (5pm, Free Admission)

On Friday October 8 at 6pm, Aaron Cometbus and Scott Satterwhite will give a presentation on their book “A Punkhouse in the Deep South: The Oral History of 309”.

Using student interviews collected before the pandemic, A Punkhouse in the Deep South (University Press of Florida) describes the lives of a Pensacola punk rock community living in one of the country’s oldest punkhouses—309. Cometbus and Satterwhite’s presentation will offer a glimpse into the house’ origins and the punks that made the house a home, all the while creating everything from music to art, and even a few businesses.

What: 309 Punk Project hosts Book Release: “Punkhouse in the Deep South”
Who: Authors Aaron Cometbus and Scott Satterwhite
When: Friday October 8 at 6pm.
Where: Vertical Record House, 2211 Seminole Dr, Railroad Room #9.

*Books available for purchase.

About the Book:
Told in personal interviews, this is the collective story of a punk community in an unlikely town and region, a hub of radical counterculture that drew artists and musicians from throughout the conservative South and earned national renown.

The house at 309 6th Avenue has long been a crossroads for punk rock, activism, veganism, and queer culture in Pensacola, a quiet Gulf Coast city at the border of Florida and Alabama. In this book, residents of 309 narrate the colorful and often comical details of communal life in the crowded and dilapidated house over its 30-year existence. Terry Johnson, Ryan “Rymodee” Modee, Gloria Diaz, Skott Cowgill, and others tell of playing in bands including This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, operating local businesses such as End of the Line Cafe, forming feminist support groups, and creating zines and art.

Each voice adds to the picture of a lively community that worked together to provide for their own needs while making a positive, lasting impact on their surrounding area. Together, these participants show that punk is more than music and teenage rebellion. It is about alternatives to standard narratives of living, acceptance for the marginalized in a rapidly changing world, and building a sense of family from the ground up.

Including photos by Cynthia Connolly and Mike Brodie, A Punkhouse in the Deep South illuminates many individual lives and creative endeavors that found a home and thrived in one of the oldest continuously inhabited punkhouses in the United States.

About the authors:
Aaron Cometbus has been publishing the zine Cometbus since 1981. He is the author of many books, including Double Duce and I Wish There Was Something That I Could Quit. Scott Satterwhite is a historian, educator, and journalist who teaches writing and literature at the University of West Florida. Cometbus and Satterwhite are former residents of the 309 punkhouse.

White Riot Documentary Online Streaming Rental!

Britain, late-1970s. Punk is exploding. The country is deeply divided over immigration. The National Front, a far-right political party, is gaining strength as politicians like Enoch Powell push a xenophobic agenda. Outraged by a racist speech from Eric Clapton, music photographer Red Saunders teams up with like-minded creatives to create Rock Against Racism. The RAR zine reports on stories and issues that the mainstream British media ignores, like immigration, the Catholic side of the Northern Ireland conflict, and the police’s controversial “suspected persons,” and speaks directly to the youth of Britain. The National Front begins to strike back, committing acts of violence against RAR supporters, but the momentum spreads virally across the UK and Europe, becoming a grassroots youth movement, while The Clash, Steel Pulse, and other top bands of the day jump on board. White Riot is a moment in time when a generation challenged the status quo, and music changed the world.

Featuring Interviews and Performances by:

THE CLASH – STEEL PULSE – POLY STYRENE – SHAM 69 – ALIEN KULUTRE – RED SAUNDERS – TOM ROBINSON BAND

ALL I CAN SAY (Blind Melon / Shannon Hoon) Documentary Streaming Rental!

We are glad to participate in the streaming of the new ALL I CAN SAY (BLIND MELON / SHANNON HOON) documentary! Click the link below to rent it from us!!!

Shannon Hoon, lead singer of the rock band Blind Melon, filmed himself from 1990-95 with a Hi8 video camera, recording up until a few hours before his sudden death at the age of 28. His camera was a diary and his closest confidant. In the hundreds of hours of footage, Hoon meticulously documented his life – his family, his creative process, his television, his band’s rise to fame and his struggle with addiction. He filmed his daughter’s birth, and archived the politics and culture of the 90’s, an era right before the internet changed the world. Created with his own footage, voice and music, this intimate autobiography is a prescient exploration of experience and memory in the age of video. It is also Shannon Hoon’s last work, completed 23 years after his death.
